History and  Mission

The Aldo Leopold Nature Center (ALNC) was established in 1994 as an independent, non-profit organization with the mission to provide hands-on programs which “…teach the student to see the land, to understand what he sees, and enjoy what he understands” in the spirit of famed ecologist Aldo Leopold.

ALNC operates two innovative nature center campuses year-round in Monona and Black Earth and uses both facilities for hands-on environmental education programming including public programs, pre-school programs, summer camps, school field trips, after school programs, scout and home-school programs, special events, teacher training workshops and interactive exhibits. Through these programs, ALNC fosters admiration and respect for nature, and encourages sustainability and stewardship of the land.

Beautiful nature center located just outside the city! They've got a lovely prairie full of diverse plant life, squirrels and a wide array of birds including a nesting pair of sandhill cranes. There's a nice array of trails through the nature park and inside there's an awesome exhibit of climate and the earth, including two very cool movie presentations in unique little theaters.

My two year old loves the Wonder Bugs preschool program! Every week there's a new topic with different activities for the kids to enjoy. It's well thought out and a great way to have kids learning about nature. Many fun events throughout the year including Maple Syrup Fest and Pipers in the Prairie. We love also love just stopping by to hike around. The whole place is beautiful.

The nature center is an amazing place for all ages! There is always something interesting to do no matter what your interests may be, there is even an exhibit wing to explore. In the summer there are fun camps for ages 2-16 and they are always very engaging and informative. I love Aldo Leopold and I am so glad that I found it!

Our son and daughter have attended the summer camps here for the last three years. They love every minute of it and always want to go back. The camp guides are very knowledgable and take great care of the kids

Beautiful nature get away, nor far from the city. It's the perfect little escape. I love just walking aimlessly on the trails
